A Christmas Jazz Concert in Harborne in aid of ‘On the Edge’ a new Fusion Youth Orchestra, 15 December 2011, 7pm.
The up and coming drummer Jonathan Silk and his Trio will be playing the first jazz gig ever performed at Harborne Baptist Church on 15 December 2011, 7-9pm. The event will be a great mix of feel good jazz and jazzy Christmas tunes, perfect to get Christmas started for all the family.
The night has been organised to introduce ‘On the Edge’ Fusion Youth Orchestra and to promote its planned activities for 2012. It’s also a great night of live music for anyone wishing to escape the traffic and Christmas madness in the city.
Local residents of Harborne will most likely be aware of the recent building redevelopment at Harborne Baptist Church. The results are visually impressive and practical for an array of recreational needs as well as spiritual ones.
Rev. David Bird has welcomed the opportunity to host the new fusion youth orchestra, On the Edge, a large ensemble dedicated to improving talented and gifted under 19s from all backgrounds across the city. On the Edge will teach an array of techniques in western and non-western instruments, and practice charts from musical origins as diverse as African, Indian, Hasidic, Arabic and Celtic, in fusion styles including elements from world, electronic, chamber, blues, soul, hip hop, funk and folk. The Orchestra promises to be an excellent cultural resource for the community.
With details of the DfE National Music Plan announced last week highlighting the creation of regional music hubs, access to quality, out-of-school music activities for young people at schools whose music departments are already stretched or non-existent is welcome news.
